""It is in our best interest to combat global warming's impacts sooner rather than later, as delay will only increase costs, not to forget the demanding expectations of our customers.""
— Alexandre Bompard, CEO Carrefour, World Retail Congress, Paris, 2024
The core tension
86% of French consumers say sustainability matters. At checkout, price wins. AI unconfigured for carbon deepens the gap.
The retailer that configures AI for both cost and carbon is making a decision its competitors have not made.
The analytical depth
The Iran conflict has pushed energy costs higher across Europe since early 2026. For a supermarket running 2,000 refrigeration units around the clock, every cent counts.
Under cost pressure, French retailers have been trimming sustainability commitments since 2022. Superlist Europe 2026: E.Leclerc last of 27 European chains. Carrefour 12th. No French retailer in the top 10.
The structural gap: 90% of supermarket carbon is Scope 3 (products sold). No French retailer has published a Scope 3 reduction roadmap covering its full product portfolio.
Carrefour has already reduced food waste by 40% via AI, against its 2016 baseline. The tool works. The objective is not.
The same AI is configured to optimise cost, not carbon. No one has decided otherwise.
Carrefour
Carrefour 2030 · AI at the Core · 12th in Europe on Sustainability
€3B+
Carrefour's total digital and AI investment commitment under its Carrefour 2030 strategic plan, announced February 18, 2026. CEO Alexandre Bompard: 'AI is one of the major strategic bets of Carrefour 2030.' Gemini deployed to 250,000 employees in 2025. AI factory in build. Supply chain, pricing, forecasting, logistics all targeted. Carrefour 2030 explicitly states: Data and AI are 'key drivers' for CSR objectives, including 60% food waste reduction by 2030.
(Carrefour 2030 Strategic Plan, February 18, 2026 / diginomica.com, February 2026)
Carrefour's 2030 plan commits to net zero on Scope 1 and 2 by 2040. These represent approximately 10% of the group's total emissions. The remaining 90%, Scope 3, covering the food products sold across 12,000+ stores, is addressed in the plan through partial measures (food waste, protein transition targets) but without a comprehensive Scope 3 net zero trajectory. This is precisely where AI has the greatest leverage: supply chain configuration, sourcing decisions, demand forecasting for lower-carbon products. The Carrefour 2030 plan deploys the same AI for commercial and sustainability objectives without specifying a governance model for when those objectives conflict. That decision has not yet been made.
"Carrefour is the clearest illustration of the configuration gap. It is the best-performing French retailer on sustainability in Europe (Superlist 2026) and simultaneously ranked 12th out of 27 chains. It has already reduced food waste by 40% since 2016. And it has just committed more than €3 billion to AI by 2030, explicitly naming Data and AI as key drivers of its CSR objectives. The architecture exists. The governance decision has not yet been made publicly."

Performance
AI Configuration
AI is the most powerful cost-reduction tool available to the large-scale food distributor. Supply chain optimisation, demand forecasting, waste reduction, energy management: Carrefour has already demonstrated 40% food waste reduction. Retailers spending hundreds of millions on AI deployment are acquiring a competitive advantage that will compound for a decade. The retailers that configure it only for cost are realising half the potential. The other half does not require a different system. It requires a different objective.
Responsibility
Carbon Governance
Scope 3 is where the real sustainability risk lives. It is also where AI has the greatest leverage: the sourcing decision, the demand signal, the product mix. CSRD is building the disclosure pressure. Superlist Europe has already published the ranking. The retailers at the bottom are not there because they lack the technology. They are there because the governance decision has not been made. Carbon governance is not a sustainability report. It is a configuration decision in a system that is already running.
